The shou sugi ban installation has officially started on the secondary dwelling, and we're loving how it's looking!
Shou sugi ban is a traditional Japanese technique where timber is charred to create a blackened finish. The charring process naturally preserves the wood, making it more durable, fire-resistant, and low-maintenance.
While it's more expensive upfront than standard timber cladding, the investment makes sense when you consider its longevity. With minimal maintenance required and a lifespan of 50+ years, it actually becomes cost-competitive with conventional cladding over time. You're paying more now but saving on upkeep and replacement down the track.
Both dwellings will feature this cladding, tying the buildings together visually while giving them that modern yet timeless aesthetic we've been after. Watching it transform the secondary dwelling has been incredible - can't wait to see both homes fully clad!
